Emergency Shropshire evacuation plan created
Saturday 19th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
New mass evacuation plans are being drawn up to help Shropshire cope with a major emergency in which thousands of people would need to be relocated.
The move has been triggered by a close examination of the Kingpin tyre depot blaze in Wem last September, and the lessons learned from the incident.
It has now been revealed that the Met Office predictions for a shift in wind direction at the time of the fire led to “considerable debate” about whether there was a need to evacuate 5,500 residents for their safety.
The fire also highlighted the fact that current emergency plans in Shropshire – and elsewhere in Britain – are based only on the short term temporary relocation of perhaps hundreds of people to rest centres, usually for up to 48 hours.
A report to Shropshire Council strategic overview and scrutiny committee, says: “The National Police Improvement Agency has recognised the need for effective arrangements to be developed following this incident and discussions are under way with West Mercia Police to take this forward.”
