The winners of a charity coracle race through the centre of Shrewsbury were celebrating today – a year after coming last in the event.

The Stars and Stripes team, from CJ Williams Funeral Services in Telford, said they had been training hard for the Macmillan Coracle World Championship after their unsuccessful attempt last year.

More than 30 teams made up of businesses and service personnel competed against each other in a series of relay races along the River Severn in Shrewsbury yesterday.

Organisers hope the event, which is how in its fourth year, will take the funds raised to over £100,000, having raised £64,000 in previous years.

Today Karen Bunning, whose husband Steve was part of the winning team, said it was only the second time they had competed.

“They did it last year and they came last, but they have been practising so hard and they were over the moon to win.”

The team was made up of Steve Bunning, Colin Price, Steve Banks and Mark Westbrook, and they raised £450 for the charity in the process.

Mrs Bunning added they would also like to thank the Greenwood Trust in Ironbridge which leant them a coracle.

Clare Nester, fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Shropshire, said it was a fun occasion.
