Oswestry man assaulted Brighthouse debt collector

An Oswestry man has admitted assaulting a debt collector. Huw Thomas, 51, who lives in a flat above the Miners Arms pub in Morda, admitted assaulting debt collector Mark Watt on December 21.

Oswestry magistrates yesterday told Thomas to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work and he was given a 12-month community order and told to pay £100 compensation to Mr Watt.

Miss Sara Beddow, prosecuting, told the court Mr Watt was a debt collector for the Brighthouse retail firm and visited Thomas because he owed them money.

Mr Watt entered the pub and Thomas appeared from behind the bar and told him to get out.

Miss Beddow said Mr Watt left the premises and Thomas followed him out.

Thomas then pushed him before attacking him from behind, punching him up to 10 times on the back of the head.

Miss Beddow said Mr Watt was trapped between Thomas and a vehicle and the attack only stopped after he put his hands up and told Thomas “that’s enough”.

Mr Watt said the attack had left him feeling dizzy and he went to Oswestry Police Station to report the assault.

He was then taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital suffering from cuts, bruising and grazes to his head, nose and ear.

In police interview Thomas admitted he knew why Mr Watt had gone to his home and admitted he had attacked him.

Mr Justin Hugheston-Roberts, for Thomas, said his client was under severe pressure at the time because of family problems and debts of more than £60,000.

He said Thomas was very sorry for the attack.
