Identity theft victim cleared of drugs link

Documents in the wallet, including his driving licence and credit cards, were used as identification to rent the house, which was raided on May 9.

Detective Constable Dean King, of Telford CID said: “Mr Bizeray made contact following the appeal in the Shropshire Star and I can confirm we have now successfully eliminated him from our inquiry.

Care

“Mr Bizeray had his wallet stolen last year and was in fact a victim of identity theft. His identity was used to rent the house where the cannabis was found.”

Mr King reminded people to take care of any documents as this case highlighted how information and documents could be used if found in the wrong hands.

“Mr Bizeray is an innocent man. He did not rent the house but his documents and his name were used,” he added. “This shows what criminals can do with documents, whether they are stolen or found in people’s rubbish. All documents must be shredded appropriately in order to avoid cases of identity theft.

“In this case Mr Bizeray could not have known what his documents were used for. We are glad we have traced Mr Bizeray and the matter has now been resolved.

“We would still appeal for anyone with information about this property in High Street, Hadley, to contact police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Police raided the house after receiving a report of a burglary taking place. When officers arrived they did not find anybody at the property but discovered the haul of illegal plants.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police said: “This is still very much an active inquiry and we would urge anyone who knows who was living at that property to come forward with their information.”
