Campaigners living on the outskirts of Shrewsbury staged a celebration to mark the successful end of their fight to stop buses travelling down a narrow lane near their homes.

Nearly 30 residents turned out for a party in Calcott Lane, Bicton, on Saturday to say goodbye to the last bus. Last month Shropshire Council announced the 70 route had been amended to stop buses using the lane.

Residents had complained to Arriva West Midlands about the damage the vehicles were causing to the road. Jan and Roy Bound, of Calcott Lane, today said they shared a cake with the driver of the last bus, Jamie Price, to mark the occasion as the last bus travelled down the road at 7.30pm.

Mrs Bound said: “It was amazing and there was a collective sigh of relief.”

Arriva said it would revise the route after a bus ended up in a ditch. Spokesman Keith Myatt said: “The revised route will see all buses running along Holyhead Road between Bicton and The Mount, then along Welshpool Road to and from Clayton Way.

“We’re sure our customers will welcome the introduction of a common route for all journeys with route 70 continuing to provide a regular and reliable service that our customers expect and deserve.”
