Call to give Ludlow 750 new homes

Plans to build thousands of homes across Shropshire over the next 15 years should include up to 750 in Ludlow, council chiefs said today.

Ludlow Town Council said the town’s current hospital site would be ideal for a large housing development if plans by health chiefs to close it and build a new healthcare facility at the Eco Business Park went ahead.

A sub committee of councillors and the town clerk has put together a draft report to send to Shropshire Council as part of the consultation process.

The report said it was vital the town had local hospital services with an adequate number of beds to sustain an ageing and growing population.

It was reported last week that extra beds had been opened at the hospital for more than four months in the last year.

The report said: “We support housing development at the hospital site, should it become available, if the site is no longer used for hospital purposes.”

Councillor Roma Jackson said: “I’m pleased that there’s support for housing development at what will be the old hospital site. I’m very concerned about what’s going to happen with affordable accommodation.”

Councillor Jackson said the decision at national government level to scrap housing targets was of concern.

She added: “That site could help us with accommodation for young people so that they can afford to stay here.”

The town council worked with neighbouring Ludford Parish Council to look at potential development sites.

The figure of 750 includes 145 houses already built and a further 232 going through the planning process.

The draft report said a long-term plan could include a minor road connecting The Sheet and Rock’s Green areas, allowing a development from The Sheet in a northerly direction.
