Reward increase over bird attacks
Monday 14th June 2010, 11:30AM BST.
A reward offered for information following the death of two peregrine falcons in a Shropshire quarry has doubled.
The original £500 offer has been increased to £1,000 thanks to members of the public who were incensed by the attack.
Falcons are rare birds and a protected species.Shropshire Peregrine Group initially offered the reward after the birds were discovered in a quarry in Clee area on May 8. The group said at the time it believed the birds had been poisoned.
John Turner, leader of the group, said: “This was a barbaric act which shocked everyone including members of the Peregrine Group which has become accustomed to witnessing the tragic results of attacks on these rare and beautiful falcons.”
The Peregrine Group said the pair that died had been nesting at the site for 15 years.
Mr Turner said today: “We’ve had donations from people in Ludlow and Clee Hill who are concerned about what’s happened. It’s been £50 or £20 here and there but it means we’ve been able to increase the reward.”
Investigating officer Constable Paul Sparrow said today that investigations into the death of the falcons were continuing and anyone with information should contact Ludlow Police Station on 0300 333 3000.
