Organisers of Cosford’s Air Show were forced to cut short the displays at this year’s event after the airbase was deluged with a torrential rain.
The heavens opened over the base, near Albrighton shortly before 4pm yesterday after about 50,000 people had descended on the site.
The main casualty was the 70th anniversary Battle of Britain finale, which would have featured a Spitfire and two Hurricanes.
Two other displays – the Bucker Jungmann aerobatic aircraft and Team Viper 4 x Strikemasters display team – were also cancelled.
The heavy rain left the air base soaked and many of the paths covered in pools of water. But organisers said the event was a success, despite ending sooner than planned.
Squadron Graham Lee, said: “Overall I think people are very pleased with the show because the weather was threatening and really we were fortunate the rain held off until almost 4pm.
“The displays were very good and people I have spoken to thought that it was impressive.”
The day started with sunny intervals but the umbrellas were out in force later as people took refuge in their vehicles or in the hangars.
