Power cut blacks out 1,700 Telford homes

More than 1,500 people in Telford were left without electricity – some for nearly three hours – following a power cut.

The fault on a high voltage network happened at about 8.30am yesterday in the Madeley area and about 1,700 customers were affected in total.

A spokesman for Central Networks today said: “It was a fault on a high voltage network and our engineers carried out a switch by using an alternative part of the network to bypass the fault.

“The alternative was used to get all the customers’ supply restored by 11.15am.”

The spokesman apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers following the power cut and said work was carried out as quickly as possible to restore the supply.

He said: “The network is available 99.98 per cent of the time. Obviously when problems do occur we do our verybest.”

Meanwhile, a power surge caused minor damage to sockets and television boxes at a home in Shrewsbury at the weekend.

The incident happened at about 6.35pm on Saturday in Twyfords Way, Monkmoor.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said two pumps and the incident commander from Shrewsbury Fire Station attended the scene and the incident was dealt with within 30 minutes.

Shropshire Star should ask the customers! The power went off at 8.30 and we didn’t have power until after 2 in the afternoon. It then went off again at 9.30 last night for over an hour and Central Networks didn’t even know.
