Region’s pubs set to welcome thirsty fans
Saturday 12th June 2010, 10:54AM BST.
Shropshire’s pubs will be transformed into a sea of red and white tonight as fans across the county gather to watch England’s big opening World Cup group game against the USA.
Many landlords in all corners of Shropshire and Mid Wales are decking out their bars in the nation’s colours and stocking up with extra beer and food as they prepare to welcome in thousands of thirsty fans.
In Shrewsbury, Debbie Balantyne, from the Boathouse Inn, said: “We have screens inside and we have a big outdoor projector for all the England matches.
“All families are welcome to visit us and we will be putting on barbecues following all England group games.”
The Boars Head in Bishop’s Castle will be showing the game on three, 50-inch, high definition screens.
Landlord Darren Price said: “It’s happy hour one hour before each England match and free food at half time and we’re doing a sweep stake.”
In Market Drayton, The Hippodrome will be flying the flag during the tournament. All countries playing in the tournament will be represented at the pub in Queen Street, which has been kitted out with bunting and flags from around the world.
The Bell Inn, Church Street, Oswestry, has revamped its outside area for the games.
Charleton Leonard, landlord and former Shrewsbury Town football player, said: “Traditionally the Bell Inn is renowned for sporting events. We do get a good following. We have an outdoor area put up that will help us.”
The Pheasant Inn, Newport, has created a mini-England terrace inside the pub complete with red and white seating – and even a replica World Cup.
But while most pubs are welcoming football fans, one publican is banning all talk of soccer in his premises. Bob Hedley, landlord of the Bradford Arms in Llanymynech on the Shropshire and Welsh border, is even threatening to issue red cards to customers.
