Joe Hart’s kit put school on road to glory

A group of Shropshire schoolchildren has proved a match for anyone after a kit donated by the county’s World Cup star Joe Hart inspired them to glory.
Ever since they received their kit from the Manchester City and England goalkeeper, pupils from the Oxon Primary School, which the Shrewsbury-born shot-stopper used to attend, have hit the school football glory trail, lifting the county championship.
Wayne Jones, a PE teacher at the school, who also taught Joe, said that the team strip was donated to the youngsters about 18 months ago during a visit by the star.
He said: “He came into the school and spoke to the kids about what it’s like to be a Premier League footballer.
“The links are still there and I appreciate him coming in and the children certainly do.
“Joe arranged for Umbro to put together a full 15-piece school strip which we have been wearing for about 18 months and in that time we have become county champions.
“I’m sure the school team give that extra 10 per cent when they play in that kit Joe donated to us.
“He talked to our school for a good half-an-hour and they were enthralled by what he had to say. I fielded a number of questions after he left – did Joe Hart do this? Did Joe Hart do that?”
Mr Jones said his recollections of Joe were of a youngster with fantastic sporting ability, even though he was only very young.
“When I was teaching him, when he was part of my football teams, I could see that if he wanted there was scope for him to develop into a professional sportsman,” he said.
“I didn’t know whether it would be football or cricket because he was exceptional in both.”
Mr Jones said everybody at Oxon was proud of Joe and they would be roaring him and the rest of the England squad on during the World Cup.
