Death crash driver told he faces prison

A 22-year-old Shropshire man has admitted causing death by dangerous driving after a crash which killed his teenage passenger.

Denys Crowther-Smith, of Primrose Lane, Prees, was breaking the speed limit and was above the legal alcohol limit when the blue Nissan Almera left the B4576 at Sleap, near Wem, and crashed into the front of a house in the early hours of October 10 last year.

Matthew Latham-Jones, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crowther-Smith and another passenger were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

More than 130 messages were left on social networking site Facebook paying tribute to Matthew, with one describing him as “one of the kindest lads ever”.

Crowther-Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of causing the death of Matthew Latham Jones during a hearing at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

Mr Patrick Thompson, for Crowther-Smith, said a blood sample had revealed 103 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood – the legal limit is 80 – and added his client had accepted he had been driving at excessive speed.

Adjourning the case until July 16, Judge Robin Onions told Crowther-Smith to be prepared for an “inevitable” prison sentence and granted him conditional bail. He also issued an interim driving disqualification.
