Oswestry alcohol control rules backed
Thursday 10th June 2010, 7:00PM BST.
Moves to introduce alcohol control zones in Oswestry’s crime troublespots have been backed by town councillors.
But councillors aired concerns that innocent people enjoying a quiet drink in the town could be penalised under the new rules.
And they also asked that Oswestry’s new £170,000 town green, which has been hit by vandalism attacks in recent weeks, be included among the designated areas.
Town councillors, at their development and planning committee, were told last night the move would not actually ban alcohol from the designated areas, but it would give more power to the police to confiscate drink from people who were acting anti-socially.
Councillors agreed to endorse the control zones and add the town green to the list.
A report from Shropshire Council explaining the move said: “It is not intended to implement a comprehensive ban on drinking in the open air but rather to eliminate anti-social drinking and the associated nuisance, annoyance and disorder.”
Councillor Christopher Schofield said: “The majority should not be punished because of the minority.”
