Officers in dead man case backed
Thursday 10th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Police officers who arrested a Shropshire man moments before he collapsed and died took “appropriate action” when they detained him, police watchdog chiefs have revealed.
It comes as Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) bosses also revealed how Jason Pearce, 38, from St Georges, Telford, was “shouting and acting strangely” in Sambrook Crescent, Market Drayton, as police arrived.
Mr Pearce was described as “agitated and disturbed” despite officers trying to talk to him and calm him down at 5.35pm on Saturday.
It is understood residents had called 999 after seeing the man behaving erratically.
The case was referred to the IPCC by West Mercia Police which is protocol.
The IPCC has now said an independent IPCC investigation will take place.
Officers restrained Mr Pearce but while on the ground he stopped breathing.
An ambulance was called while officers tried to save his life but he was confirmed dead at the scene.
Len Jackson, IPCC commissioner, said: “It appears officers took appropriate action in the manner they detained Mr Pearce and acted promptly once it was realised he had stopped breathing.”
The IPCC will be submitting its findings to coroner Mr John Ellery for a future inquest.
