Vandal-hit town green in camera cover plans

CCTV cameras could be installed at the site of Oswestry’s new £170,000 town green, which has now been targeted by vandals twice within a week.

But any decision on whether to install the cameras will only be taken after the new attraction is officially opened and a full security assessment made, officials said today.

Shropshire Council conservation officer Shaun Burkey also revealed the site will not open to the public on Friday as initially planned – because the turf is not ready, rather than because of the vandalism.

Vandals tore down fencing and daubed obscene messages on paving at the town green at the weekend.

The previous weekend windows on a digger were smashed at the site.

Mr Burkey said: “This is just one or two idiots causing trouble on the site and we have to keep it in perspective. Up until the two incidents, we have been troublefree and it is important to stress that.

“We have to be positive and upbeat and point out that the vast majority of people in Oswestry have been very positive about this project.

“Oswestry town councillors have mentioned CCTV cameras to deal with the problem. This is an option at the moment. It is too early to make a decision on that. That is something we will assess once it is officially open.

“From my point of view I think the best option would be for all Oswestry residents to take pride in the site, to care for it and to have ownership of it. It is their town green at the end of the day.

“We have to strike a balance between allowing people to use the site as a town green in a pleasant environment and looking at the security of the site,” said Mr Burkey.

As a charitable gesture I have undertaken a full security assessment on behalf of the Council.

My conclusion is the cameras should be installed, the mindless dingleberries caught, and forced to restore the park to its original condition at their own expense (or the expense of their parents).
