Alcohol ban talks in Oswestry
Wednesday 9th June 2010, 5:47PM BST.
A ban on alcohol on Oswestry’s streets could be brought in – more than a year after the no-go zones were first designated.
A huge crackdown on more than 30 boozing troublespots in and around the town had been ordered by Oswestry Borough Council before the local authority was wound down.
However because officials at the time did not follow the proper procedures, the alcohol control zones have never been brought in.
Now Oswestry Town Council has been asked to look again at the areas of the town where the ban was first suggested so that the new Shropshire Council can work towards the designation. The town’s Cae Glas Park, Festival Square, the Central Car Park, play areas, churchyards and some of the main streets are among those suggested for the zones.
Areas in Oswestry, Weston Rhyn and St Martins were put forward as alcohol control zones 15 months ago. The zones are controlled by a designated public places order which means that people would be committing an offence if they carried on drinking when asked to stop by a police officer or a community support officer.
Shropshire Council, which took over the responsibility for the orders, will have to restart the consultation process again.
Weston Rhyn and St Martins Parish Council are also being asked to look again at the areas suggested for designation.
In Weston Rhyn the recreation ground, Village Institute grounds, churchyards and the Chirk Bank play area are among the areas where zones could be designated, while in St Martins, the recreation ground, memorial garden and village play areas are suggested.
Oswestry Town Council will look at the areas at its meeting of the development and planning committee today.
A report to tonight’s meeting, which will start at 6pm at the Guildhall, will urge town councillors to consider whether the areas initially identified still have anti-social behaviour issues.
In the report, the unitary council’s head of public protection David Edwards, said: “Please be advised that this council should not proceed to make an order in cases where there are no current problems.”

Great idea but cheap booze is available to all from every corner shop, off license and supermarket. So there’ll always be drunkenness.
