Shrewsbury sports bar to reopen for World Cup
Tuesday 8th June 2010, 11:33AM BST.
A Shrewsbury town centre bar which has been closed for more than two years will be reopening this month as the county’s first dedicated sports bar, bosses revealed today.
Players Sports Bar and Grill will open at the former Yates’s site in Mardol on June 18, in time for the second England match of the World Cup.
The bar has been empty since March 2008 when the Laurel Pub Company, which owned Yates’s, shut it with the loss of 45 jobs during a nationwide closure programme.
Mark Woodhouse, who lives in Shrewsbury, is taking over the site with his brother Neil in their first ever business venture together and they say the bar will initially create about 10 jobs.
They have experience of running bars and pubs in the Shropshire area.
Mr Woodhouse today said the bar would bring new life back to a part of the town which was once thriving.
He said: “We are going to have lots of TVs and sports memorabilia and a proper grill with burgers and steaks.
“There is going to be live football, live rugby, cricket, basically any sport that people want to watch.
“There is lots of sports memorabilia and we have got the number one chair from Wembley when England won the World Cup in 1966.”
Bosses say they are planning a special preview night on June 17 for 400 guests.
