Oswestry safety alert as motorists break speed limit
Tuesday 8th June 2010, 12:00AM BST.
One in 10 drivers break the speed limit on a notorious road near Oswestry, new figures have revealed.
Campaigners say the statistics prove safety improvements are desperately required on the A495 road, which takes traffic from Shropshire into Mid Wales. They said today that they would now push even harder for safety measures.
Shropshire Council’s highways department placed an automated traffic counter on the A495 between March 17 to March 24, following complaints about speeding traffic from members of Llanyblodwel Parish Council.
The figures from the survey show the counter recorded a total of 18,087 vehicles travelling towards Llynclys.
A total of 1,512 vehicles – just over eight per cent – were found to be travelling at more than the speed limit of 60mph.
The counter recorded 17,047 vehicles travelling towards Llanyblodwel.
A total of 2,158 vehicles – nearly 13 per cent – were recorded at travelling at more than 60mph.
Arthur Walpole, Shropshire councillor for the Llanymynech area, said the recently released figures added more weight to the campaign for safety improvements.
He said: “The figures are very revealing and it gives us an extra impetus in our campaign. We knew the average speeds on the roads but our suspicions always were that slow moving tractors or trailers would have reduced the average speed.
“We asked for how many vehicles were actually breaking the speed limit and these new figures support our concerns.
“There has been serious accidents on that road and something needs to be done.
“We have been calling for improvements and have been asking for an automatic speed warning sign to be installed by the side of the road.”
