Work begins on repairs to footbridge
Monday 7th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Work got under way today to replace a footbridge in Shrewsbury which was severely damaged when a digger on the back of a lorry smashed into it.
The bridge in Hazeldine Way was taken away in October following the incident.
Replacement is expected to cost about £100,000 which the council is seeking to recoup through insurers.
The initial work will include preparing the site so that the pre-made bridge can be craned into position.
John Williams, team leader for structures, strategic highways and transport at Shropshire Council, said: “This work may require the use of traffic lights on Hazeldine Way. If this is the case, the lights will only be in use between 9.30am and 4pm so as not to coincide with the peak traffic periods.
“The lifting in of the new bridge is programmed to be carried out during the evening of June 30, during which Hazeldine Way will be closed to traffic.”
If conditions such as high winds prevent it, a contingency closure is booked for July 1.
