Letter: Activities of Shrewsbury group are varied
Monday 7th June 2010, 9:26AM BST.
Letter: Just a few facts to lob into the furore over The Quarry and the Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents’ Association – the association is open to anyone who lives “within the bridges” and promotes a “healthy variety and balance of activities in the town centre” (see STCRA website).
The views of any single member do not necessarily represent the views of the association.
For the sake of town centre business, STCRA has over a long period contested the Tesco application – successfully, if I understand the Star’s front page article correctly.
It was STCRA which finally persuaded the council to allow bands to play in the Quarry bandstand again.
It was STCRA which was instrumental in the restoration of Old St Chad’s.
STCRA members volunteer for stewarding town centre events, for tidying public spaces and for regular litter-picking.
Complaints were made at a theatrical performance at Attingham Park about noise from a Quarry concert – so perhaps what is needed is not a raising of the decibel level, but a better distribution of sound within The Quarry arena.

This is the problem with STCRA, the town centre is not just for them but for all . It is for the use of every council tax payer , every business owner, every individual that uses it. STCRA own or rent properies in the centre they do not own many if any of the business’es pubs, clubs, quarry, etc etc etc .
Stcra stop being silly narrow minded little nimbies and get a grip or hobbey

All I can say is turn the music up encourage better bands and fetch in a hell of a lot of trade to the town.If STCRA continue this town will struggle in the future.

“For the sake of town centre business” don’t make me laugh! Do you include Ashley’s in this? A poorly thought-out letter full of contradictions. I’m afraid STCRA are being exposed for what they really are and will have to do better than picking up a few bits of litter to restore any reputation they may once have had amongst the MAJORITY of residents. 2/10.

I find it very hard to believe that sound from a Quarry concert could be heard at Attingham Park but if this is correct then if the sound heard was the normal level of similar concerts then something is seriously wrong and those adversely affected would seem to have a justifiable crib. Attingham must be six or seven miles away from the Quarry and the volume must have been absolutely incredible if this allegation is correct, indeed, there would have not have been an area of Shrewsbury including all it’s suburbs who would not be affected by the concerts sounds.

How come the sound from the Quarry gig was heard at Attingham, when i couldn’t hear it from my back garden? (I live very close to the town centre) It’s nice that STCRA pick up litter, but they also make life difficult for those wishing to enjoy the town and hear live music. They may have persuaded the council to allow bands to play in the Quarry bandstand again, but i’ve never seen this happen. Does it mean that anyone can turn up and play there? Will they welcome guitars, amps, drums? Or just classical music and brass bands.
Why won’t the STCRA come forward and talk about this situation? If only they would agree to listen to what the people of shrewsbury want and try to work towards more entertainment for all ages.
The STCRA may have helped some town centre shops by fighting Tescos, but what about all the money lost because they restrict the use of the quarry?
If the STCRA want to help businesses in the town, maybe they could use their influence to sort out the mess Parkright makes ? Also, why are they so interested in expansion on Meole Brace Retail Park – surely beyond their remit ?
Restoring St Chads is marvellous, but a restored church in a dead town ain’t much use. We need some art, music, freedom and good will in Shrewsbury, less NIMBY-ism and a more open minded attitude to the young and entertainment for all.
Apart from some noise pollution from time to time, what are the downsides of using the Quarry as an arena?
None that I can see, most towns seize the opportunity to make money entertaining the masses with both hands – why don’t we ?

I am not surprised that concert noise from the Quarry could be heard at Attingham.
Showing my age, but I lived in Kilburn when Live Aid was at Wembley Stadium and could hear it clearly. A good 10 miles and surrounded by London’s noise.
Maybe there needs to be some coordination of outdoor events to avoid spoiling competing events? Probably too much to ask.

Hi Andrew, you are the same Andrew involved with Shrewsbury Summer Season I presume. I imagine, quite rightly you feel the need to stand up for the good things you have contributed to within the Town. However, bands at the band stand is hardly awe inspiring or inspiring in the slightest (Especially when it is used barely once a year). There seems to be a genuine movement afoot to try and push Shrewsbury into the 20th Century. (Never mind the 21st). Please don’t feel your previous hard work has gone unnoticed, it has not. But if you are the pro-active person you seem to be, perhaps joining the facebook group, listening to ideas, absorbing the enthusiasm for change, embrassing and guiding it may be a good place to start. This is not a group set up to maintain the vested interest of a small proportion of Shrewsbury residents (Some of which appear to use the STCRA for their own aims) but a group for ALL Shrewsbury people to express their views on what has been, is being and what needs to be.
Just a question, but was the Attingham Park complaint the year after Jules Holland event moved from there?)
The kind of events this town is crying out for could bring exciting change and enormous revenue into the Town. I am sure most would embrace and welcome the possibilities

I think everyone is aware that weather conditions can alter the passage of sound quite considerably. Unfortunately that is something that cannot be helped, much like the torrential rain we get in our summers!
We are extremely lucky in Shropshire not to suffer from a grat deal of aircraft noise pollution, somthing that is constant in London and other cities yet they still seem to be able to hold outdoor events.
Shrewsbury is becoming a retirement only town which is not a good indication for the future.
If we really had a healthy variety and balance of activities in the town then we would have more provision for young people, a proper skateboard park, a swimming pool that is not well past the ‘sell by date.’ An Art Gallery with provision for local schools and colleges to hold exhibitions.
I haven’t seen any support for this kind of provision from the STCRA, just opposition for example to the Shrewsbury High School’s new Gym because it wasn’t designed to look like a Mediaeval Hill Fort or the such like!

You blamed Tesco for taking up to £3.5 million of town trade whilst you held up the demolition of 1 Bridge street, Stopped a town centre business from having outside seating for possibly a whole summer and drove the Folk festival out of the Quarry because you would prefer a bit of peace and quiet..
Welcome to Shhhhhhh rewsbury…

They got the council to let bands play in the bandstand, i don’t think so. We’re not even allowed to sit in it when it’s raining. We always get moved on. We’re not being noisy, we’re not smoking or drinking and we don’t drop litter, so what’s the problem? Try bringing a guitar into the quarry and see what happens, five minutes before you get moved on. This town has very little for our age group, unless you have lots of money and can pay to go to the cinema. I know we get free entry to the swimming pool, but sometimes we just want to get with are mates and chat. Not many places in town where we can do that. Eva a skatepark and art gallery for young people would be nice, not much chance though.

The Quarry is an ideal venue for outdoor concerts. It’s like a natural amphitheatre and perfect for a music concert.
Lots of places are holding events. I went to the music festival in Audlem over the Bank holiday weekend and saw what a boost for the village it is. The residents positively embrace it as they can see what a tremendous boost it is for their village. The pubs and local shops do good trade and everyone’s happy. This is a small village, not even a town.
Times are so hard and we have a facility (the Quarry) that can bring in lots of trade to the town. Let’s use it and build a reputation for putting on the best shows in the County.

Maybe it is time for the key members of the Facebook group and the STCRA to have a public meeting?
Maybe common ground can be achieved for ALL town centre residents?
Maybe it’s time that the good of the town and not it’s individuals is given precedence?
If the town is to survive in the 21st century then new ideas must be embraced, holding onto the past will not work or enrich it’s community.

Not a problem with that although I note that the STCRA (in particular Dr Shrank) are very conspicuous by their absence at the moment. Maybe, just maybe they’re scared that they may not have it all their own way for once?
Over 2000 members in the Disenfranchised Shrewsbury Residents group by the way….

Hi Andrew,
I’m really pleased to note that, thanks entirely to the efforts of the STCRA, the council have now been persuaded to put bands on in the Quarry bandstand again. Therefore, would you mind letting me know how my band (Massive Noise) can apply to play. As a result of your most welcome comments, I trust STCRA will endorse our application and the event itself. For your information, we play a mixture of hard rock, punk, screamcore and experimental sonic noisecore.
Thanks very much for the information and I look forward to your response.

I’m really looking forward to your performance at the bandstand, i hope your application is agreed to quickly as i’ve seen no activity at this beautiful facility. Seems like such a waste. Good luck and see you there soon.

So where are the STCRA in all this. They normally take every opportunity to have their say. Have they all gone on holiday? No comment?!?!
To be honest, the Shropshire Star always contact Shrank if they want a comment and he’s never normally shy of plodding out his usual boring mantra about what a pain in the butt us normal citizens of Shrewsbury must be trying to ruin his buildings and quality of sleep and all that.
However, maybe in future the paper should get in touch with the Disenfranchised Shrewsbury Residents Facebook group who, after all, have around two thousand more members than the STCRA.
Who is more representative? Remember, town centre facilities are there for everyone.
It’s about time we had a group to stand up for what most people in shrewsbury want. I still don’t understand why nothing has been said by the STCRA, have the Shropshire star even asked them for a comment?

STCRA do more harm than good.

I dont know y stcra get a say about the quarry its a public place owned by shrewsbury and atcham council meaning its for everyone not just those who live close. Thay never have a problem with the flower show which closes a public venue to anyone not paying y? because it suits them and their outdated moral code. Shrewsbury’s chocking on its own history and lack of change and stcra are the ones forcing it down our throats when its not what we want!

These words in particular made me laugh:
“the association is open to anyone who lives “within the bridges””
“The views of any single member do not necessarily represent the views of the association.”
I live ‘within the bridges’ and I’m sure that as an individual my views wouldn’t represent the group as whole so in that respect you’re correct.
This letter smacks of STCRA. It’s all well and good pointing out the ‘good’ that they do but it’s also important to note how suffocating the STCRA is to Shrewsbury Town.
If Ted Bundy volunteered for Age Concern, it wouldn’t excuse his spree of rape, necrophilia and murder would it?

I am a newcomer to Shrewsbury and was most excited to move to such a beautiful town. With nearly ten years experience in the live music industry both from a venue and outdoors point of view, the lack of utilising the town’s full potential has been disappointing. This letter says to me a scrabbling at straws to prove the STRCRA are needed, but I fail to see a full picture of them assisting in covering all arts and events targeted to a variety of age groups and differing tastes. The work regarding Tescos and St Chads is good but only a small piece of the jigsaw in making a ‘nice’ town rather an outstanding town appealing to all. As much as I appreciate their assistance at events, litter picking and stewarding volunteers are standard practice at any large event. I could guarantee that a different event targeting a different age group would not be short of similar volunteers either. Oh and I doubt they would have to remind everyone that they had done it for our benefit. Finally with regard to the last sentence I can only think of one word to conclude my thoughts – ignorance. I highly recommend that Mr. Bannerman contacts a reputable PA firm to have an engineer explain to him how sound works at an outdoor venue. I would gladly put him in touch with one.

There’s a lot to respond to here, so please excuse me if I miss some points
1) Thank you, Matt for a little bit of politeness – it’s a pity some others can’t follow your example. I can’t see what’s to be gained by abuse. This may be why there has been no official response here by STCRA.
2) I do NOT speak on behalf of the STCRA. It is up to the Committee and members to decide how (or if) to respond to any press/media article
3) I can assure the disbelievers that a complaint WAS made concerning the disturbance of a performance at Attingham Park, caused by noise from a Quarry concert. So I stand by my suggestion that, if sound levels at some concerts are considered by some of the audience to be too low, possibly what needs addressing, is the DISTRIBUTION of sound WITHIN the Quarry arena.
JTH regards this as ignorance on my part. I have some experience of PA, but am not an expert. JTH does not explain why my suggestion is “ignorant”.
4) The STCRA persuaded the Town Council to allow local bands to use the Bandstand again, as they used to regularly some years ago and STCRA sponsored the band which played last Sunday. I suggest that a local band which wishes to use this open-air facility apply to the Council.
I disagree that this is unimportant, Matt. The Bandstand is a beautiful thing and using it regularly could give a lot of people of people of all ages and different tastes a lot of pleasure.
5) Jack Hughes and others make the most important point – that the Quarry is for EVERYONE. This means that there must be some give and take.
Some years ago the Horticultural Society put pins and string over the grass in the Quarry, three weeks before the Flower Show, in the peak holiday season. They were persuaded that, despite the importance of the Flower Show, this made using the Quarry dangerous for children, those with impaired sight and dogs.
Similarly some people may want to have rock music played very loudly there much of the time – others would regard that as unbearable. A balance has to be struck.
6) I agree with Observer that a well-advertised public meeting about the use of the Quarry would be a good idea.
7) Personally I have been involved with several FREE events in the Quarry and will be involved in a major one next year. I believe that free events whch last one or more days do more good for town business than evening events with a high ticket price, where people bring their own refreshment or buy it within the arena.
