Father killed attempting river rescue
Monday 7th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
A man has died while trying to rescue his daughter from a river in Mid Wales.
The father of two, who has been named as Philip Jack, 45, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, died on Saturday at Llwyngwern Farm, a campsite near Machynlleth. The incident happened at about 5.45pm just south of the road bridge which crosses the river Dulas, close to the Centre for Alternative Technology.
The former county swimmer, the father of two daughters, was expecting a third child with his partner.
His family today said said they were “very proud” of him. In a statement released through police they said: “He was a wonderful father, partner, son and best friend. We are all very proud of him and love him very much. We were, as a family, looking forward to the arrival of our new baby next month.”
Inspector Diane Davies, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “This is a terrible tragedy and my heartfelt sympathies go to Mr Jack’s family as well as individuals who witnessed the incident and valiantly tried to save him.
“Mr Jack’s death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed. A post-mortem examination will take place to confirm cause of death.”
Inspector Adrian Evans added: “Police were alerted to an ongoing incident where a child had entered the river and had been rescued from the water. A man who’d entered the water in an effort to rescue the child was believed to still be in there.
“Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene but tragically the body of the man was recovered from the water.”
Nicole Beaumont, the owner of the campsite, said: “It’s been a very sad day.”
She added: We didn’t know them but they were an ordinary family, it was a dad with two little girls who he’d brought on holiday to give the mom a break.”
