Firefighters battled for nearly four hours to rescue a cow which had fallen into the River Severn last night.

Fire crews were alerted to the incident at about 8pm after the animal had strayed from land on Woodlands Farm in Bicton, near Shrewsbury.

A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The cow was rescued using agricultural machinery and fire service equipment. The water rescue unit was sent out to Montford Bridge where the cow had been swept downstream.”
