Hundreds of people lined the streets of Whitchurch to take part in a new festival celebrating the town.

More than 400 people visited the Wonder of Whitchurch (WoW) Festival on Saturday, which organisers described as a “huge success”.

The event boasted a range of free attractions, entertainment and refreshments, while a wealth of independent shops were open for business to entice visitors.

Rob Hewson, a Whitchurch town councillor, said the event was very well supported and he was already looking forward to next year’s. “I am still buzzing from the weekend,” he said.

“We were lucky with the weather and the town was heaving.

“The the festival was appropriately named because everyone there was ‘wowed’ by it.

“The shops and pubs were busy and I think about 400 to 500 people must have attended, including people from outside of the town.”

The event also featured singing from the Borders Singers chamber choir in St Alkmund’s Church, while St John Talbot’s Technology College pupils were invited to enter a competition to take photographs of the towns famous landmarks.

There was also a window display contest for shops and a presentation by the Whitchurch Better Welcome group.

The festival closed with an evening performance at Whitchurch Civic Centre by Irish country and folk singer Jimmy Buckley.

Mr Hewson said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the event to make it a huge success for the community of Whitchurch.

“My only slight criticism was that I would like to have seen the events spread out a bit more and for more to have taken place down Green End.”

The festival was organised by Whitchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce. It was supported by the town council and Shropshire Council, which helped with funding for the event.
