Arrest man dies in Market Drayton street

A man collapsed and died in a Market Drayton street while being taken into police custody. A police investigation has been launched after the death in Sambrook Crescent.

The West Mercia force has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which will lead the investigation.

Officers were called to Sambrook Crescent shortly after 5.30pm on Saturday to reports of a disturbance.

Inspector Dave McWilliam, from West Mercia Police’s Shropshire Division, said when they arrived at the scene, officers detained a man but, before they were able to take him from the area, he collapsed.

He said despite the best efforts from police and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead a short while later.

He said: “At the present time we do not know why the man collapsed and the cause of his death is not likely to be known until a post mortem examination is carried out.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have information about this death and anyone who may have information about the disturbance that occurred.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000. The incident has been referred to the IPCC as is routine with deaths following police contact.”

Mark Pearson, spokesman for the IPCC, said today: “We cannot say a great deal at this stage but we have received a referral from West Mercia Police regarding a man’s death in Market Drayton.

“We have dispatched IPCC investigators to begin an investigation and they are presently assessing the situation.”

Neighbours have spoken of their disbelief following the death.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “Everyone is shocked by what’s happened.”
