Accident fear over changes to roads

Monday 7th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.

A new traffic system in a Mid Wales town is a “major accident” waiting to happen, it was claimed today. The new system in Pool Road, Newtown, needs to be looked at urgently, the town mayor said.

It comes after a problem-filled weekend after traffic queues backed up out of the town as people attempted to travel from Shropshire and the West Midlands to the Welsh coast.

Councillor Joy Jones said she was still left bewildered that nothing had been done to sort the problem out.

She said: “The new traffic light system in Pool Road desperately needs to be looked at as I fear it is a major accident waiting to happen.

“For a start the queues are horrendous but then when they are on green it can be really difficult to see what is coming and I fear there will be a potentially major incident because of it.

“For those turning up to Kerry Road in particular it is a problem and I fear nothing will be done until someone is seriously hurt or killed.”

Earlier this year, Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said fire engines attending emergencies were being held up by the traffic.

Many motorists claim it can take more than an hour to get from one side of the town to the other.

The Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency and Powys County Council are monitoring the problem.

This was predicted by most people, but those in the planning offices always know best.
The roundabout should never have been removed and Tesco should have been to build outside the town, in Mochdre for example.

Re new traffic lights at Pool Road Newtown. One problem at this junction is when one wishes to turn right into New Kerry Road. It is not possible to see cars coming straight accross heading west.
