Shrewsbury road to close for cycle scheme completion

Motorists in Shrewsbury are set for a traffic headache as one of the main routes into the town is due to close for two days as work is competed on a cycle scheme for the town.

The town’s Welsh Bridge is due to be closed on June 13 and 20 as Shropshire Council staff complete work on a new cycle scheme for the town.

The council said shops and businesses would be open as normal during the work.

Work will include new street lighting, kerbing and paving works and will also feature the resurfacing of the road on the Welsh Bridge.

Disruption

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said that the work is being carried out to complete the Sustrans Connect2 cycle scheme and to minimise future disruption, the council will also resurface the road on Welsh Bridge at the same time.

To ensure the safety of motorists and the council’s workforce, the Welsh Bridge will be closed to traffic on the relevant days.

During this essential closure, a signed diversion route will be in place.

Shops and businesses will remain open as usual and access for pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

Mr Taylor-Smith added: “This work will complete the scheme which has successfully improved links to the northern part of the town.

“The crossings have also made things much better for pedestrians in this busy area.”

Sustrans Connect2 is funded by a £50 million Big Lottery Fund grant after the UK public voted the scheme the winner of The People’s Millions Lottery contest in December 2007.
