Mine activists set up a camp kitchen
Friday 4th June 2010, 11:05PM BST.
Environmental activists fighting plans to mine coal in the shadow of The Wrekin have now added to the facilities at their makeshift camp – a new kitchen.
The latest development to make the camp off Huntington Lane a home from home was today accompanied by an appeal for food. About two dozen campaigners are camped at the base off Huntington Lane, Little Wenlock.
They are protesting at plans by UK Coal to mine 900,000 tonnes of coal at the site.
The numbers in camp swell at weekends and the structures put up at the camp are continuing to expand.
The protesters have already built one giant treehouse, nicknamed The Donkey, and another they call The Pirate’s Palace.
The extent of construction work is in addition to a myriad of tunnels the activists have dug under The Wrekin in an effort to thwart any mining operations. There is also a towering lookout post dubbed The Fort.
Camp spokeswoman Dawn said: “We’ve had a busy time on the construction front, with structures going up and more tunnels going in.
“First up, due to the steadily increasing numbers of mouths to feed, we tore down the old kitchen tee-pee and built a brand new kitchen building with prep areas, more storage and now enclosing the washing up area.”
Chris Crouch, spokesman for UK Coal, has called the protesters’ actions “irresponsible”.
He said today: “The protesters have been there for some time and have repeatedly stated they are making a peaceful protest.
“We will, in due course, invite them to honour their word and leave.”
He added: “We will, however, be prepared to take whatever legal action is required as and when the need arises.”
Dawn added the mood in the camp was bouyant and activists were still determined to battle on for the long term.
