Letter: Mutiny on the buses

Shrewsbury bus station

Letter: I am delighted that our MP, Daniel Kawczynski, has taken notice of the chilly, depressing, customer unfriendly bus station in Shrewsbury.

Ideally I would like it relocated near to the market, which has sadly declined since the bus station’s construction on the Smithfield.

Problems include poor information: those manning the booking desk never seem to have knowledge of breakdowns in bus services, so one is left wondering whether to hire a taxi or not.

There are also inconvenient routes (especially for pensioners who have no car). Since Arriva’s reorganisation of timetables, those living in the Belle Vue area are unable to catch a bus home from the bus station, but have to lug their shopping uphill to St Mary’s Square. (I personally, have ceased shopping for food, especially in the Riverside Precinct, and I suspect many others limit what they purchase in town.)

The St Mary’s bus stops are woefully inadequate, especially in inclement weather, with small shelters and seating exposed to the elements on a narrow pavement.

When the queues are large, passing pedestrians have to walk on the road. The electronic timetable is unreadable due to poor lighting and the information is often inaccurate.

Arriva need to pull up their socks.

Yes, the Bus Station is a mess – but that is the fault of the council rather than Arriva surely; after all it is owned by the council. Looking around the country, it is rare for any bus company to be responsible for the upkeep on the bus station.

Secondly, if by ‘booking desk’ this lady means the people in the travel shop – why should they know anything about the bus services? The travel shop has absolutely nothing to do with Arriva.

Agreed – the electronic displays are virtually useless, and not just because they can be illegible. But again, thats the fault of the council, not the bus operators.

There is no doubt that in some areas Arriva need to improve – there should definitely be a supervisor or inspector in the bus station who is able to answer operational queries and to regulate the buses (there might be one already; if so he/she is virtually invisible). But to write a letter like this, to moan about EVERYTHING and then blame it all on Arriva – is just absolute nonsense.

    And not really fair either.

As the bus station is predominantly operated by Arriva, I would say that they have a responsibility for it’s up-keep as well as the council, surely??

Also, I think the lady means the information desk within the bus station which, quite rightly, should be aware of break downs and delays in the services.

Shirley A Reynolds is clearly not moaning about ‘EVERYTHING’ either, merely the poor/lack of service provided by Arriva and the shoddy state of the bus station.

Re-read the letter then make a comment Jeepers!!

I don’t necessarily agree with the idea of re-locating the bus station as I think it’s quite well placed, however, it definately needs a revamp.

I did read the letter correctly Jennifer. She said ‘Booking Desk’ rather than ‘Information Desk’. The only ‘Booking Desk’ I know of is the one inside Traveltime (the shop). And its nothing to do with Arriva.

And the state of the bus stops in town is ALSO nothing to do with Arriva.

And yes, clearly she *did* moan about ‘everything’ when it comes to buses. As for the siting of the bus station, when *you* say that *you* believe its quite well placed, I assume that you mean it’s quite well placed…for *you*.

Arriva is Arriva messy outfit if trains are to go by. However is there a need for these polluting piles of scrap to be driving through the town center at all??? why can’t people walk to the bus station? no excuses about the old folk and bags all i see is young to middle aged people to idle in most cases to walk through a shopping center.

Shirley Reynolds ends her letter by saying “Arriva need to pull up their socks” and yet nothing she is complaining about is the responsibility of Arriva.
The market has declined, not because of Arriva, but because 90% of people now prefer to shop places like Tescos.
The bus station is the responsibility of the council not Arriva. Arriva pay a rental fee to the council for the priveledge of parking busses there, as do the other bus companies.
The bus stops in St. Mary’s are the responsibility of the council.
The electronic information displays don’t work because the council withdrew the funding.
The bus station is in a disgusting state but perhaps if the council spent less money subsidising the theatre and projects such as Quantum Leap they could improve the first view many people have of the town.
It’s easy to point fingers at Arriva and blame them for all the woes in town, but it doesn’t help in bringing to task those really responsible.

Haven’t used the bus since I found out it costs more to get 4 people to Monkmoor on the bus than it does for a taxi! Crazy! No wonder people use cars!

the bus station is a haven for under-age people smoking and drinking every-time i walk into it i feel intimidated by the crowd of people, the buses are never on time and there needs to be more low floor ones for people with pushchairs, you have loads of shopping and you are expected to get your child out fold the pushchair and carry your bags on with no help of the driver what so ever who just look at you struggling , the bus station needs sorting out desperately .

Low floor buses are meant primarily for people with disabilities and the elderly. Not for those people who expect to crowd on a bus with pushchairs without bothering to collapse them.

And the driver is there to drive the bus – not to act as a butler.

I don’t work in the bus industry and even *I* know these things:-)

Try collapsing a double buggy and carrying shopping bags. It’s really not easy. It’s even a struggle with one child. I think your comments are very unfair. If they want parents with babies to use the bus services then making it easier is not to much to ask.

when i last lived in shrewsbury midland red buses lined up in the square prior to sharing barker st bus station with vaggs, williamsons, mid wales etc
there is something to be said for country services to return to barker st and town services drop off pick up around town, thus releasing smithfield for development
