Illegal immigrant jailed over Telford cannabis factory role
Thursday 3rd June 2010, 12:03PM BST.
A Vietnamese illegal immigrant has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after he admitted acting as a “gardener” for 611 cannabis plants at a cannabis factory in Telford.
Thong Nguyen, 24, of no fixed abode, admitted the production of a controlled drug of Class B in Stebbings, in Sutton Hill, in Telford, between October 5, 2009 and March 5 this year.
Nguyen entered a guilty plea at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.
Miss Jo Barker, prosecuting, said Nguyen was given food, accommodation and £200 a month paid directly to his family in Vietnam. “For that he was expected to water plants, trim and dry leaves and bag them up.”
She added when police entered the property they found every room had been converted into a cannabis factory and Nguyen was sleeping on the kitchen floor.
Judge Robin Onions said: “He’s paid money to people to get him into the UK and then comes over here and finds he can’t work because he’s illegal so he’s gone into this house.”
