Passer-by rescues dumped kittens
Wednesday 2nd June 2010, 6:30PM BST.
Two tiny kittens dumped by the side of one of Shropshire’s busiest trunk roads have been rescued after being spotted by a council worker.
RSPCA officials say the four-week-old black kittens had been left to die in a cardboard box on the verge of the A5 near Oswestry. They were in a cardboard box that was noticed by a council worker who was clearing rubbish from the Oswestry bypass yesterday morning.
He put them safely in his vehicle and took them to a local RSPCA inspector’s home.
Judith Haw from the RSPCA said inspector Chris Dunbar no longer covered the Oswestry and North Shropshire area for the RSPCA but lived locally.
“The council worker knew where Inspector Dunbar lived and turned up on his doorstep with the box and the kittens,” she said.
She said Mr Dunbar arranged for the kittens to be taken to the RSPCA’s headquarters in Dorrington. She added that they had been too young to be taken from their mother but lucky had been accepted by a surrogate mother cat and would be rehomed when they were old enough.
“They have been christened Billie and Bella,” she said, adding: “We are somewhat concerned that the mother may have also been abandoned with her kittens but had escaped from the cardboard box.”
She said it is a criminal offence to abandon animals in a way that could cause cruelty and urged anyone with information to call the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
