Packed meeting over abattoir expansion plan
Wednesday 2nd June 2010, 11:27AM BST.

Residents packed into a north Shropshire village hall to oppose plans to double the size of a nearby abattoir which they claim already causes “diabolical” traffic problems.
Anglo Beef Processors, at Hordley, near Ellesmere, has applied to Shropshire Council for permission to bulldoze its abattoir and replace it with a modern, more energy efficient complex twice the size.
And while ABP says it will not lead to an increase in traffic, concerned residents attending the meeting at Hordley and Bagley Village Hall last night said they were already blighted by the volume and speed of vehicles through their villages.
But Rob Davies, of ABP, said: “The planning application being proposed will reduce the amount of traffic through your communities. The shunter wagon that takes fridges up and down the road – that operation will not happen any more.”
He added: “There will not be an increase in the number of people working at ABP. There will not be an increase in the amount of meat coming out and there will not be an increase in the kill.”
But residents said they were suspicious of claims there would be no extra output. They also raised concerns on light and noise pollution from a proposed weighbridge.
Suggestions were also made to expand the ABP plant in Shrewsbury instead.

so a company employing many people wants to expand but the locals don’t want it?
so when abp move to another town and the location is full of houses will the locals like the size of the village?

Evidentially not a local man, Jeff, otherwise you wouldn,t have written such an ill informed reply.

abp is a massive company and needs to be located on or near an A road Jeff. Its situated on a country lane with lots of trucks and employees cars going back and forth. Far too big for its location. Would be much better on an industrial site. Dont know if your familiar with Battlefield – hug ind est, ideal location for traffic, abp offices already there? Sounds like a plan to me. But hey, abp seem to run everything around here so we all have to fit in with them.

I seem to remember when ABP expanded last time, they said that they were providing jobs for the loacals. So how many locals do work there! not as many as the outsiders who have to travel there by motor cars etc, I bet. Do any of the managers or boss live on the route that the incoming cattle three tier steel sided wagons take, with thier banks of spot lights shinning in your face and rattling metelwork waking you up any time of the night??????? I DOUT IT. What happened to the noise & light pollution act! If planning allow this to go through! I wonder if they would let me also have planning to build three houses in my garden, I’m told that it’s a none development area, but if they grant it maybe the managers would like to buy one of them and just think of the money and pollution they could save.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In this troubling time with recession still looming, the fact that any company willing to not only replace out of date equipment which not only would create better energy efficiency and help reduce factory noise but safeguard the jobs of its current employees is a noble and courageous move. In a time where almost 3 million people are out of work not just though companies closing as profits have decreased due do to the economy but the ongoing new standards set by the government to increase the due diligence needed for the food and drink market, expansion and improvement will take place in any company where production of consumption products will be forever improving. To move a site such as ABP would cost far more than an improvement to its current site, which is to say the least if locals are tired of the noise created by traffic the proportion of them moving house would not even be a full numerical percentage of this cost. I suggest we nurture the fact that this improvement would not only improve matters to the business but if it does open up a few more jobs for the un-employed, I can only sit back and applaud.

Of course so many people have apposed it, I can not believe ABP Ellesmere have got away with its rediculous ‘happenings’ this far. The roads around hordley are dreadful, pot hole central at the moment. Grass verges are being warn away, speeding drivers, lorries which speed round corners and over shoot the road into farmers fields, driving crashing into the back of a tractor and trailor with clearly stopped to let people pass. What do ABP say it employes local people, yes local people if you happen to be eastern european living in ellesmere, and have a talent to fit 8 people into a car. The aluminimum lorries arent meant to rattle down the road after 7pm yet at 8pm wednesday 9th night one went wizzing on down. ABP need to concentrate on its current problems and issues and listen to people concerns not try and cause new ones… o sorry i remember this is meant to improve them.
