Did you hear the one about the ex-MP?
Wednesday 2nd June 2010, 10:29AM BST.
Former Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik has found a new career – by becoming a stand-up comedian.
The 45-year-old is booked to perform a 10-minute routine at London’s Backstage Comedy Club tonight.
The Liberal Democrat lost his seat in the House of Commons after 13 years.
He was one of the shock casualties of election night after his 7,000 strong majority was overturned by Conservative Glyn Davies.
But tonight he will be making his debut in Covent Garden at 9.30pm.
“I’m a bit nervous about it all but looking forward to it at the same time. Doing Have I Got News For You last month has whetted my appetite and I have done more than 800 after-dinner speeches in 20 years, which is a form of stand-up.
“I don’t know what people are going to think and it’ll be a completely different way of life for me but I’m sure it’ll be a bit like politics but funnier. It was never my intention to go into comedy but if people like it, and I enjoy it, we’ll see where it goes.”
