Hundreds of walkers were today stepping out in aid of charity for one of Shropshire’s biggest fundraising events.

The 22-mile Bridgnorth Sponsored Walk was taking place today from the market town’s High Street to the summit of Brown Clee and back.

About 1,400 people – 1,200 seniors and 250 junior entries – are taking part in the marathon trek.

Walkers are travelling from as far away as London, Southampton, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Weymouth for the event.

The Mayor of Bridgnorth Councillor Val Gill was cutting the tape to signal the start of the fundraising foot-slog this morning.

The mayor and her husband Ray were then due to be among the walkers.

Special traffic safety measures will be in operation along the route for the duration of the event.

Besides the walk there will be a number of added attractions in Bridgnorth High Street.

The town’s second food fair is being held in the High Street when scores of top quality local producers will display their goods.

And local pubs, cafes and restaurants will also be staging special promotions to coincide with the events.
