Shropshire set for anti-knife crime march
Thursday 27th May 2010, 6:00AM BST.
A protest march against knife crime will be held in Shropshire next month after the stabbing of Shrewsbury teenager Ryan Allis-Smith.
The march against the use of knives was launched after Ryan, 17, of Belle Vue, was stabbed twice in the back last week, while trying to protect a friend from a gang of yobs.
Scott Everington, 19, set up the Facebook event “March of awareness of knives” within hours of hearing of the stabbing in Castle Walk in Shrewsbury.
The event will be held in Hadley on June 26 from 11am to 6pm. The venue has not yet been finalised.
Mr Everington added: “After what I heard and saw about that young lad getting stabbed, I wanted to organise some kind of protest.”
Youngsters from schools including The Wakeman School, Corbet School in Baschurch, The Belvidere Secondary School and Ryan’s former school The Priory have said they will be attending the march.
Ryan, who is now recovering at home, said he supported the event.
He was discharged from Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham on Friday after undergoing surgery to stitch his wounds on Wednesday.
Sergeant Andy Murdoch, of Telford police, spent 18 months researching knife crime and launched an educational pack to take to schools across the borough.
He said: “As long as the march is done peacefully and safely – then the right message will be sent out.”
Schools interested in using Sgt Murdoch’s educational pack can call Telford police on 0300 333 3000.

Good to see that even these futureless malcontents can raise a cheery smile, probably because that’s him up the ‘respect’ pecking order.

Whilst in favour of any support to spell out the unacceptable dangers of carrying knives I hope that this march will also embrace an anti racist stance.
