Inmate given extra sentence over attacks

A 21-year-old inmate at a Shropshire young offenders institution has been given a nine-year extended sentence after attacking a fellow inmate and a prison officer.

Javid Hussain appeared in Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

He admitted wounding inmate Jack McCulloch with intent on June 28 last year and assaulting prison officer Martin Edwards and causing him actual bodily harm on August 11 last year.

Judge Robin Onions said Hussain was a significant risk to others and sentenced him to an extended sentence of nine years with a custodial element of seven years for the wounding with intent and 12 months, to run concurrently, for the assault.

Mr Andrew Barkley, prosecuting, said both incidents took place at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institution in Market Drayton.

He said: “Jack McCulloch was asked by Mr Hussain to sit alongside him for their evening meal. He was aware of being struck from the right hand side to his neck from behind.

“He then describes being dragged backwards from his chair. Mr Hussain was armed with a bottle, repeatedly lashing out.”

The court heard Mr McCulloch sustained cuts to his face, neck and arms and the neck of a broken bottle was found in Hussain’s cell.

Mr Barkley said the second incident as Mr Edwards was putting inmates in their cells. He became aware that someone was behind him.

“Without warning from the rear he is struck to the left eye with a clenched fist,” added Mr Barkley.

The court heard Hussain decided to “bang an officer” because he wanted to go to another jail.

Mr Edward Soulsby, for Hussain, said he was remorseful for his actions, which were due to his extreme immaturity.
