Cricket match halted after ‘fracas’
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 10:20AM BST.
A Shropshire cricket match had to be abandoned after a “fracas” on the pitch over decision.
The game between the Oswestry Thirds and Whitchurch Thirds was halted on Saturday.
It is understood that decision over whether one of the Oswestry batsmen was out, led to an “incident” at the Division Three game.
Just 16.5 overs had been played with Oswestry 124 for no wicket.
No-one would comment today on what happened but Whitchurch Thirds refused to continue and victory was awarded to Oswestry.
Both teams play in the FBC Manby Bowdler Shropshire Cricket League.
League spokesman Dave Ralphs said that the league’s disciplinary committee had been alerted.
“I have asked for full statements from both teams and when those are received, the committee will consider the matter,” he said. “All I can say is that the game was abandoned following an incident.”
Both the captain of the Oswestry and the Whitchurch teams, Allan Morris and Iain Marsh, said that they had been told by the league not to comment.
The game was being played at Oswestry School.
It is believed problems came to a head when Oswestry’s opening batsman, overseas player Rhys McCarthy, was given not out. McCarthy was 84 not out at the time with second batsman Joe Clarke on 18 not out.
On the Shropshire Cricket League’s play cricket website, a report says: “Whitchurch refused to continue the game, thus conceding victory to Oswestry.”
