A Shropshire supermarket has been reduced to a charred shell following a suspected arson attack.

Sixty-foot flames billowed from the roof of the Spar supermarket in Malinslee, Telford, and a series of explosions shook neighbouring residents from their beds just after midnight.

More than 30 firefighters were drafted in to tackle the blaze.

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of arson and were in custody this morning being questioned by police.

The men – two 19-year-olds, a 25-year-old and a 37-year-old – are also being questioned on suspicion of other charges including violent disorder and affray.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said officers believed the fire was linked to two fights involving a large group that broke out around the supermarket over the weekend.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0300 333 3000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Let’s hope it doesn’t take as long to replace it as it did at Leegomery!

The blaze was massive and could be seen in Dawley and much further away apparently. The noise was horrific, its so lucky that noone was injured. A useful service has been lost from the community of Malinslee now and will cause much inconvenience.

I live across the road from the shop and never heard a thing! The first i knew of the fire was 11am the next morning when I went to buy a pint of milk! Glad no one was injured or worse… Lets now hope that the Council pull thier finger out and get on with the new shops which were ment to be completed by now.. The burnt out shop was to be turned into flats, so lets see some action not like the Leegomery fiasco!!

i was away on the nite of the fire but was informed at 6.30am..wat a waste the shop provides a life line for so many people. the people who own the shop i feel sorry for they were only trying to earn a living rather than sponge off the state.

Regarding Nicks comments, you couldnt have bought milk as the spar had burnt down. but your correct with your comment on the new shops, about time too!! We are in dire need of a shopping complex to be started & finished. And this time will they please stock perperami firesticks for gods sake.

Regarding Harold’s comment, if you reread my input, I said, “The first i knew of the fire was 11am the next morning when I went to buy a pint of milk” Thats when I found a burnt out Spa shop…….
Malinslee is in a Void with a new School and run down housing estates. Without its local shop/community centre I fear it will plummet into the forgotton zone, while the Town Centre and Park area gets its new facelift.
Why dont they adopt Shared Onwership in Telford?? That would surely inject some well needed pride into the area.
I dont know why some idiots have ruined our local shop, I just know the’ve upset a whole community.

Lets hope they catch the people who did it. We don’t need people like that in our community. They are idiots who spoil it for everyone else
