Reward increased over falcons’ deaths
Monday 24th May 2010, 7:00PM BST.
A reward for information following the death of two rare birds in south Shropshire has been increased after donations from the public, it emerged today.
Shropshire Peregrine Group initially offered a reward of £500 after two peregrines were found dead in the Clee Hill area near Ludlow earlier this month.
The group said at the time it believed the birds had been poisoned.
Three eggs were also found, but the group did not believe they would be successfully incubated as they had been left exposed for too long.
John Turner, from the peregrine group, said today: “We’ve put the reward up to £750 because we’ve had some donations from people at Clee Hill who have been very generous offering money.”
The bodies of the birds were sent to a Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs lab for testing.
Inspector Ken Mackaill, for the south Shropshire region, said the police investigation was going well.
He added: “We are always keen to hear from any further witnesses. We can be contacted at Ludlow Police Station on 0300 333 3000 or people can pass on information anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Peregrine falcons are a protected species which was almost wiped out in 1960s.
