Bucks set to announce new boss

Monday 24th May 2010, 12:03PM BST.

AFC Telford United were today closing in on appointing a new manager and are aiming to unveil the winning candidate on Wednesday.

Chairman Lee Carter had set a deadline of week beginning May 24 to unearth a successor to Rob Smith, and had planned to make an announcement sooner rather than later.

He was remaining tight-lipped this morning, as anticipation grew that an appointment was imminent.

But a statement has been released on the club website, declaring: “The club have now almost completed the process of recruiting a new first team manager. We expect to be in a position to make a formal announcement on Wednesday.

“Once the announcement has been made we will be looking to arrange a meeting with fans on an evening in the week commencing May 31.”

Front-runners for the Bucks’ hotseat include Andy Sinton, Mark Cooper and Jeff Kenna, as well as Blue Square North bosses Andy Preece (Northwich) and Dean Thomas (Hinckley).

The successful applicant will have a busy start, with just three players currently contracted for next season.

Meanwhile, players’ player of the year Shane Killock who has 12 months to run on his deal insists he will be out to impress the new man at the helm.

“We’ll be looking to push for promotion and hopefully I can play a part,” he said.

“It’s nice to have the security of another year, but with another manager coming in, he’ll have his own plans and ideas, and will want to bring his own players in.

“I’ve got to go in for pre-season and, like everybody else, start from scratch. Hopefully I can do enough to get into the team.”
