Soldiers given civic recognition

Saturday 22nd May 2010, 11:30AM BST.

More than 150 soldiers who will march through Telford when they receive the Freedom of the Borough will be handed one-off commemorative tiles designed by The Jackfield Tile Museum.

The Rifles Regiment will be honoured at a ceremony in Telford Town Park next Saturday when they will collect the honour.

As part of the ceremony, gifts will be exchanged between the Rifles and chiefs from Telford & Wrekin Council.

The regiment will hand over a silver bugle and in return its soldiers will get the unique tile .

The inscription on the tiles reads “to mark the honour of Freedom of the Borough of Telford & Wrekin, conferred upon the Rifles Regiment on May 29, 2010.”

ouncillor Andrew Eade, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “This council is honoured to be bestowing the Freedom of the Borough on the Rifles.

“The bravery of members of the regiment who have been deployed worldwide including the Falklands, South Georgia, Kosovo, Belize, Iraq and Afghanistan where they have been actively involved in recent conflicts is exceptional.”

Residents and visitors will be able to meet the Rifles from 10.30am in Telford Town Park where the regiment will be holding a display.

At 2.35pm the new Borough Remembrance Memorial will be unveiled in the park with the freedom ceremony following at 3pm in the park’s arena.

At 3.25pm the soldiers will march around Telford to exercise their Freedom of the Borough with the Lord Lieutenant taking the salute. Councillor Stephen Bentley, said: “We hope this keepsake will serve as an extra reminder of the celebrations.”

Great turn out, Great Day, Typical Councillors!
Families of 2 Rifles travelled to this event in Telford to see their brave sons in this march.
Chairs in the stands were for councillors only?
My own son was marching and we met families of other Riflemen at the event.
One family we arranged to meet travelled 200 miles to see their son march and couldn’t buy a cup of tea or food at the town park as there was non on sale.
Obviously the council would not allow it!
We were told to meet at the International centre after only to find we were not allowed in.
Guests & VIP only? Not for families of Riflemen
After we kicked up a fuss we were eventually allowed in to be told drinks or food was not for us.
It was for the fat ass councillors only.
Telford & Wrekin Council could not organize a Pxxx Up in a brewery!
    Freedom of the borough?
    TWC
    Hang your heads in shame!
