Wrekin climber rescued from ledge

Friday 21st May 2010, 9:32AM BST.

Firefighters launched an hour-long rescue operation after an 18-year-old climber got stuck on a ledge 30ft up on The Wrekin.

The man’s friends raised the alarm at about 9.20pm yesterday and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service sent an aerial ladder, a Land Rover and crews from both Telford Central and Wellington to the scene, off the Forest Glen car park.

Crew manager Dave Buckland, of Wellington Fire Station, said: “We are not sure how long the man had been up there but he had been climbing with a group of friends when he got stuck.

“He had climbing shoes on but not a harness and so we think he was a free-style climber.

“He was perched on a ledge 30ft up and so we had to use the ladder to reach him.

“A firefighter went up and walked him down to safety.

“He was then checked over by an ambulance crew and we left him with them.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said a rapid response vehicle was sent to the Forest Glen car park at about 9.50pm.

He said: “They checked over an 18-year-old male.

“All observations were OK and everything was all right, although the man did have some heart palpitations.”

He added: “He recovered from them, however, and he went home with his friends.”
