New mayor is following his father

Friday 21st May 2010, 8:50AM BST.

A north Shropshire town’s new mayor has spoken of his pride at following in his father’s footsteps.

Councillor Roger Smith was unanimously elected as mayor of Market Drayton at a meeting last night, with the chain of office handed over by outgoing mayor Councillor Roy Aldcroft.

Councillor Smith, 65, was first elected as town councillor in 2004 and was deputy mayor of Market Drayton for the last 12 months.

His father Bert Smith, who died in 1989, was the first ever mayor of Market Drayton of 1974.

He later served a second term five years later when he was also awarded an MBE for services to the community.

Councillor Smith said: “I feel very proud and privileged to have the honour of being made mayor of Market Drayton, following in my late father’s footsteps.

“This coming year will no doubt present a big challenge to us all, following the recent change in Government and the present economic climate.

“However, I feel that we must all try and look forward to the future by helping to make plans to improve the long-term prospects of the town.

“I would also like to see our shops and businesses doing well and to this end, we can all help to make this happen by using the local facilities more often as and when possible,” he added.
