More people banned from town’s pubs
Friday 21st May 2010, 11:33AM BST.
An additional 30 people have been banned from pubs across Shrewsbury ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.
The figure was revealed by Constable Mike Dulson at a meeting of Meole, Column and Sutton Local Joint Committee yesterday.
Speaking about the town’s Pubwatch scheme, he said in total 110 people were banned from pubs in and around the town.
Members of the scheme support each other in an attempt to reduce incidences of violent, criminal or disorderly behaviour in pubs. The programme is backed by a radio network which allows members to share information with the police. In addition the police provide confidential photographs to assist staff identifying excluded individuals.
Mr Dulson said: “80 people are banned under the Safer Shrewsbury Pubwatch scheme because they have received a fixed penalty, a caution or have been charged with an alcohol-related offence.”
He said that following a national meeting this year those made the subject of football banning orders had been added to the list.
He said: “Anyone under a football banning order can be banned from pubs showing football and in the last eight weeks a further 30 individuals who are banned from football matches have been banned from pubs in the town centre.
“I hope now that England gets to the final without any problems in Shrewsbury.”
He said: “The World Cup historically sees an increase in drinking and antisocial behaviour which coincides with pubs showing the events on large screens.”
Mr Dulson said Pubwatch had been running for about six years and was part of a national scheme to crack down on troublemakers. He added in the past four months about 20 venues had joined the scheme.
Yesterday it was revealed the initiative has seen drink-related incidents in the town drop.
