A man feared to be armed with two swords sparked a four-and-a-half-hour siege at a house in a Telford cul-de-sac today after refusing to come out when police arrived to arrest him.

Armed officers and dog handlers were drafted in to Spout Way, Malinslee, and two police negotiators were called in when the stand-off began at about 5.30am.

Dozens of neighbours gathered in their gardens to watch as the man frequently taunted police from an upstairs window of the semi-detached home.

The man, who has not been named, at one point shouted out to one of the trained negotiators: “I don’t want to talk to a stranger. You have come to arrest me now we have a stand-off, haven’t we?”

The drama finally came to an end at 9.55am when the man gave himself up and was arrested at the scene.

Telford police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: “The 44-year-old man came out of his property peacefully after negotiations with trained officers at the scene and he is now in custody at Malinsgate Police Station.”

Mr Ammonds said the drama began when officers went to arrest the man at 5.27am on suspicion of harassment but he stayed inside his home.

He said two swords had been seen at the address.

Church Road was sealed off in both directions at its junction with Spout Way and cars were turned away as the stand-off continued. A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “He is a nice lad, he is one of the best. His mum was ill and died about two months ago and he has taken it badly.”

Mr Ammonds said that after the man gave himself up the containment area around the property in Malinslee was removed and so traffic problems eased quickly.
