More pubs join Shrewsbury scheme to cut drink crimes

Dozens more pubs in Shrewsbury have signed up to the town’s Pubwatch scheme in time for this summer’s World Cup. The scheme has seen drink-related incidents in the town drop.
Violent crime and drink have fallen by 16 per cent in the past 12 months.
Now pubs in areas outside the town centre have signed up for the scheme in the last few weeks, boosting membership by 40 per cent.
Richard Goodchild, from Pubwatch, said: “Pubs from across the Belle Vue, Copthorne, Abbey Foregate and Coleham areas have signed up to Pubwatch in time for the World Cup.
“This is pleasing news, membership has risen 40 per cent in the past few weeks and we now have a very pleasing 46 pubs signed up.
“It means that anybody who is banned by Pubwatch or has a football exclusion order will not be able to watch the games from pubs in the town this summer.
“It will help us and the police to ensure that the town is safer than ever during what is a typically busy time.”
Earlier this year, Pubwatch bosses said a clampdown on troublemakers had helped make the area much safer and they now took a “zero tolerance” approach to persistent offenders.
A large number of banning orders have been slapped on those intent on causing trouble.
Officials say that the PubWatch partnership is a scheme designed to support the management of the town’s licensed premises with the aim of achieving a safer, more pleasant environment which all members of the public can enjoy.
