Vandals target tourist boat
Wednesday 19th May 2010, 7:59PM BST.
A passenger boat business offering tourists trips along the River Severn in Ironbridge has been targeted by vandals just weeks after it was launched. It was the latest attack on Ironbridge Scenic River Cruises.
It saw signs ripped out of the ground near the boat’s landing stage and hurled into the River Severn.
Roger Bell, river boat manager, said on another occasion the vandals had tried to let the pontoons at the riverside go causing between £3,000 to £4,000 damage. He said it was only a new business and if the vandalism continued they could have to cease operating the service.
Nearby Ironbridge Brewery said it had also suffered vandalism over the two-and-a-half years it has been in business, with the latest attack seeing its barbecue thrown over a wall and smashed.
Mr Bell said: “We have had some vandalism. The landing stage got vandalised. They tried to let the pontoons go. It caused us a lot of problems. It would have meant passengers climbing down on a ladder to the boat. It cost us £3,000 to £4,000 to get it sorted.”
He said: “We are still getting vandalism.”
Mr Bell said someone had also tried to get onto the boat while it was moored up overnight in the river. He said more CCTV cameras needed to be put in place.
Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “Our local policing team are not aware of these problems but now they have been notified about them they will be making contact with the boat company.”

Still pounding out the mantra that CCTV will solve everything. Complete and utter self deluding nonsense. Real police {no plastic bobbies please}, unhindered with form filling, out there and visible meeting local people. The ONLY way.
If you read the article I think you’ll find that the request for more CCTV didn’t come from a politician or police but from the owner of the vessel, a man who presumably doesn’t have any other vested interest but to protect his livelihood and investment.
