Thieves take £2,000 in copper from sub-station
Wednesday 19th May 2010, 12:31PM BST.
Thieves smashed their way in to a Telford sub-station and fled with £2,000 of copper, police said today.
The break-in at the Central Network sub-station in Waterloo Road, Ketley, saw thieves break through metal security fencing at the back of the premises before stealing the haul of copper earthing wires by disconnecting earthing bolts.
Police said the thieves must have had expert knowledge.
They also unhinged a door to prise their way in. A total of £100 of damage was caused.
Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, said: “The offenders must have had some element of expertise due to the nature of the theft and the knowledge needed to get in successfully and safely and to be able to take the copper in the way that they did.
“The copper they took was worth £2,000 and £100 of damage was caused.”
Mr Ammonds urged anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the Waterloo Road area between 6pm on Friday and 8.30pm on Monday to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
