Town church could become play barn

Wednesday 19th May 2010, 9:58AM BST.

An historic disused Powys church may be converted into a children’s play barn and activity centre. St David’s Church, a Grade II listed building in Newtown, was closed four years ago.

It shut after parishioners were unable to raise thousands of pounds needed for vital repairs.

But Grandstand Leisure Ltd, of Trefeglwys, has applied to Powys County Council to change the use of the church to a children’s play barn/activity centre with restaurant/cafe.

They also want to incorporate a two storey steel construction for a youth room with an office to replace the existing timber frame school room and put up external metal railings and floodlighting.

The vicar of St Llwchaiarn’s, the Reverend Andy Grimwood, said today he wished the new project for St David’s Church every success. He said: “Speaking as a local, I think it is excellent that the building will get a new lease of life.”

A listed building consent application is being sought by The Church in Wales to remove the rood screen and reredos panels from St David’s to St Llwchaiarn’s Church in Newtown.

The historic wooden carved rood screen and reredos panels are believed to have been made in Newtown in the 1600s and are regarded as a fine example of wood carvers’ work of that time. Mr Grimwood added: “By moving the panels to St Llwchaiarn’s Church where they will be displayed on the walls of the balcony, it will mean they can be kept in Newtown.”

Nobody was available at Grandstand Leisure Ltd to comment on their plans.
