Smash and grab spree on parked cars

Tuesday 18th May 2010, 10:50AM BST.

Thieves have caused thousands of pounds of damage in a “smash and grab” car crime spree in Telford, police said today. A total of 16 cars were targeted in Dawley and St Georges over the weekend.

It resulted in hundreds of pounds of equipment and belongings, including satellite navigation systems, being stolen.

Chris Ammonds, spokesman for Telford police, today warned people not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles, either on display or hidden away.

He said: “In these incidents the offenders are smashing the windows and grabbing whatever they can – it only takes seconds.

“The usual items are being taken including sat navs, stereos and purses. I would urge people to remember not to leave anything of value in their car, regardless of whether it is on show or not. If the car is in a vulnerable place, such as a dark, quiet street or car park, these people will target it.”

Mr Ammonds said the specialist operation team was now focusing on the crime spree, forensic teams were involved and CCTV footage was being studied.

“It is possible that the same people are responsible for all or most of these thefts. Anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously around any vehicle should call police,” he added.

“If officers find that the person is at that particular place for a legitimate reason then that is fine but their call may stop an offender in their tracks.

“We are now looking to get on top of this and make sure that this recent increase in car crime is stopped.”

How many times must people be told do not leave valuables in your car, remove sat nav’s and slip them in your pocket/ bag. do not gives the thieving scum anything to steal and if and when they are caught make sure they are punished to deter any further crimes.
