Man in hospital after assault

Tuesday 18th May 2010, 11:29AM BST.

A man was knocked to the ground, kicked in the head and left unconscious in a serious assault which took place as he walked home from a night out in Market Drayton, police said today.

The victim, who has not been named, also suffered serious facial injuries and had to be taken to hospital after the attack.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened or who has any information about who was responsible to contact them on 03003 333000.

Officers said the victim was walking along Cheshire Street between about 3.20am and 3.30am on Saturday when he was hit on the head from behind and knocked to the floor.

While on the ground he was kicked numerous times to the face, head and upper body before he lost consciousness, police said.

He suffered a fractured eye socket, broken nose, large cut above one eye and bruising to his head and arms, officers added.

Following treatment in hospital, the victim reported the incident to police on Sunday.

Officers are now trawling CCTV footage from the town centre in a bid to catch the perpetrator.

Constable Lyn Downes said: “The town is likely to have been relatively busy at that time with people heading home after a night out.

“If anyone saw what happened or has any information as to who was responsible, please could they contact police immediately.

“Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where a cash reward is sometimes offered.”
